Lady Gaga's Tribute to Bill Clinton

On August 19th, Bill Clinton received the biggest surprise party any former president has ever gotten on his birthday: Lady Gaga. After rolling out in a white tree house, she serenaded our late president with her top hits, including "Born This Way", "Edge of Glory", and "Bill Romance". With altered words to reflect the president's accomplishments, the concert was certainly a "Marilyn Moment".
Though you rarely hear her real voice on her albums, Lady Gaga actually can sing. She has a great voice, backed by her piano. Though a bit strange, Lady Gaga has a lot of talent. Her dancing alone is amazing, not to mention she's singing all the while! The choreography was great, as well as the costumes. Over all, it was a great show. Happy Birthday Mr. President!

Fall Fashion Wish List

As everyone in Austin is noticing, it is getting COLD outside. Going from our record number of over 100 degrees days in a row to SEVENTY FIVE degrees in the late afternoon. (aka right now) Now in any other part of the world, this change would be a wonderful change of still war, but slightly cooler conditions. However, this IS Austin. we are so used to the scorching temperatures this will (at least for me) call for some major wardrobe changes. Here are the top 3 things on my fall fashion wish list (don't forget, this is from a fashion novice)

1. A cozy winter hat

 picture from sugarscape

Whenever i see these hats I automatically think WINTER, FIREPLACE, HOT CHOCOLATE!!! Making these super cozy and great for the fall/winter spirit. This particular hat is a designer hat, which can get really expensive, but hats just like these are made for a fraction of the cost.

2. Slipper Boots

photo from Delias
Keeping with the whole comfortable-warm theme, these slipper boots are amazing to wear around the house and while doing homework.

3. Finally, a super stylish sweeter that could keep one warm all day. This sweeter has a winter white look, with a modern touch of lace butterfly sleeves.

Is a very potter music actualy "TOTALY AWESOME!" ?

In short, the answer to the question is YES. A very potter musical is actually "totally awesome". In the upcoming tour, The Space Tour officially announced on September 27th, there has been some speculation as to if Darren Chris, who plays Harry Potter, will come on tour with them. So far, we know that Chris will join the cast for the new your performance on -November 26th. While this is understandable considering Chris's stardom from glee and broodway musicals, it was disappointing that he would not be joining the crew on the whole tours. After all, what is a very potter musical without HARRY POTTER? Coming to all the tours are:
Brian Holden (Lupin)
(my personal favorite...--->Lauren Lopez (Draco Malfoy)
photo from flickr.com

Dylan Saunders (Dumbledore)
Joseph Walker (Voldemort)

I, as i assume most other a very potter musical fans are, was totally unaware that there were other people out there that were obsessed with it as i was. Yet i quickly figured it out when the general addition tickets to the show in Austin sold out in under 10 minutes, and the VIP tickets in even less time. Anotne's, where the show will be held in Austin, will be packed with ready to laugh fans, so if you are lucky enough to have a ticket, get there EARLY to get good seats!!

Review of the show to come soon :)

One For One

The idea of Toms started with a man named Blake Mycoskie. During one of Blake’s visits to Argentina, he befriended many children who had no shoes to protect their feet from the hard Argentina earth. Moved, Blake decided to take action. He created a company, TOMS, that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a new pair to be given to a child in need. Later that year, Blake returned to Argentina with over 10,000  pairs of shoes.
Soon after the company's start, TOMS became extremely popular. It could have been their casual looks, or their comfortable design, or people just wanting to help out. No matter what it is TOMS are a great moral and fashionable trend.

One for one. Changing the world.

Shopping on a Budget

Looking for a new look without breaking the bank? Next time your at the mall, try these spending techniques to leave stylish and guilt free!

1) Think before you buy! Sometimes you see something and instantly want to buy it. Don't! Imagine yourself walking down the hall in it, keep shopping, and if you still like the outfit, buy it. You might even want to wait a few days.
2) Shop in the discount section first! A common misconception is that its for people who can't afford regular clothing, and that it's outdated or poor quality. This is false! Some of my greatest outfits come from the discount rack!
3) Don't buy name brand. Name brands are very expensive. Most stores will sell the exact same thing at a cheaper price with the same quality.
4) Don't take a bunch of cash or a credit card. When you have no limit on your money, you often just keep spending without keeping an eye on your budget. Plan ahead of time what all you want to buy, and bring just enough to cover it.
5) Keep the tags! You might find that a few days after purchasing the outfit that you no longer like it. If you keep the tags, you can trade it in for something that you like better.

The Man Behind the Music: KiD CuDi

Ever heard of Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi? Okay how about KiD CuDi?
You may know his music, but you don't know him. Kid Cudi first made it to the top 10 with Day ‘n’ Nite. Over 4.6 million digital copies of his album Man on the Moon have been sold. But all of that is the stage man you know. Scott Ramon was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Shake Heights. His mother was a middle-school choir teacher and his father was a world war  II Air Force veteran, and a house painter. When Scott was eleven years old, his father died of cancer, this event has been greatly reflected in his music and personality.
Scott Ramon also recently sparked an interest in acting, starring in the new HBO comedy 'How to Make it in America'. Personally I have not seen an episode, and will always see KiD CuDi as a musician more than an actor. But no matter what hes doing Kid Cudi is an inspiration to many people and a musical icon.

Have they hit rock bottom yet? Probably not.

Living in Austin Texas, one becomes accustom to seeing the strange and insanely bizarre on a daily basis. From Eeyore annual birthday party to the infamous thong guy, to Leslie the famous hobo, one would think nothing surprised us Austinites anymore, However, that assumption would be wrong. People all over the world have been doing so pretty crazy things all throughout history, looking at this photo essay, i was amazed at the crazy shoes people have worn, and are still wearing. Yet, the real question is whether these fashion statements have any practicality whatsoever to them. The first shoe from that list that comes to mind when thinking about practicality (or lack of it) was the heel less shoe. Like it says in the photo essay, these were reported to be comfortable by the models who wore them, but could cause injuries if worn for long periods of time. Other than practicality, in my opinion, some of these shoes are downright ugly and/or freaky, yet SUPER fun and funny to look at.

While all of these shoes are over the top, my favorite crazy shoes are the clear platform shoes with live fish inside them

Which Lead Leads You?

So I could really use some help choosing which lead I should use on my opinion piece. Feel free to give feedback or new ideas for an even better start:

Descriptive/contrast
Picture yourself walking home on a hot Texas day, sweat causing your black sweater to stick to your back. Now picture yourself walking down the same street wearing a white sundress, the sun bouncing off your back and a breeze flowing across your dress. Not being able to wear white after labor day is a terrible rule that should not be taken literally

Contrast and Compare:
Looking back to America in the 1930’s you would see people in dark conservative clothes keeping to them selves. Looking at America today you see a collage of vibrant, light colors.
Not wearing white after labor day is a old-fashioned rule that is very much outdated.

Narrative/anecdote:
Coco Chanel: french designer, modernist, and a trend setter, who's fashions lasts centuries. In 1969, Coco broke the ‘no white after labor day’ rule with one of her signature white suits. Since then, the rule has not been treated the same.

Thank You!!

Possible Opinion Piece Leads

Descriptive:
A young boy, maybe about 15, walks down the street. He’s wearing a hoodie and over-sized jeans. Out of his pocket dangles long white wires, ending in his ears. Even from afar, you can hear the beat of the heavy metal he’s listening to. This boy will be one of the 5 million young people to experience early hearing loss.

Contrast and Compare:
It’s 1970. Stevie Wonder’s Live album has just been released. If you can get your hands on a record player, you’ll find that the dynamics are amazing. The volume rises and falls at exactly the right moments, and the bass is clearly audible. Now fast forward to 2011, with Lady Gaga’s Edge of Glory. The beat gets you on your feet, but you find that there isn’t any dynamic but loud, and you have trouble hearing the back beat. This is the tragedy of the loudness war.

Direct Address Lead:
Your pumping up your favorite tunes, swaying slightly to the beat as you do your homework. The vocals are great, but your having trouble hearing the back beat. You crank it up a little more. What you don’t know is that this is that you are developing tinnitus. This means that your ears are becoming unresponsive to certain frequencies, and are starting to become sensitive to certain noises. As you increase the volume, this problem becomes worse.

Leads for my opinion peice

So, these are different types of leads for my opinion peice which is about how making recorded music free to the public will actualy help artists thrive PLEASE CHOOSE WHICH ONE WOULD MAKE YOU WANT TO KEEP READING THE MOST :) THANKS :) -Soph

Descriptive:
Imagine the average hacker. Sitting in a dark room in the early hours of the morning with the window cracked opened and a slight breeze blowing through rustling the papers on their desk. They are working hard and long to illegally download the new hit songs. Maybe because they have nothing else to do, or they are attempting to preform a community service for others, yet either way they are disrupting the hours of hard work that was put into “securing” that song so that it could not be taken for free. Although it may sound slightly insane, the easiest and most effective fix to this problem is making the recorded track free in the first place.

Contrast and Compare:
In the Early 1960’s when the first real music program was written by max Mathews, it was all about the music and how great it was to get it online. However, recently it is no longer about the joy of listening to recorded tracks online, but how fast and free one can download it.

Twist :
Its finally Friday after a long hard week, and your favorite artists new album is coming out today! You rush home to get the album online because you consider your self to be a true lover of music for only the joy of listening. Although we wish this were true, unfortunately few people actual feel this was. Recently downloading music has been purely about how to get it fast and free.
